Tax Saving Guide: Section 80C, 80D & Home Loan Benefits Explained

India's tax code rewards specific financial habits — saving for retirement, insuring your health, and buying a home — with direct deductions from your taxable income. Used well, these sections can lower your tax bill by a meaningful amount every year, but only under the older tax regime, which is worth knowing before you plan around them.

Section 80C: Up to ₹1.5 Lakh Deduction

Section 80C is the most commonly used deduction, covering a wide range of instruments up to a combined limit of ₹1.5 lakh per year:

Section 80D: Health Insurance Premiums

Who's CoveredMaximum Deduction
Self, spouse, and children₹25,000
Self and family, if senior citizen₹50,000
Parents (below 60)Additional ₹25,000
Parents (60 or above)Additional ₹50,000

These limits stack — a taxpayer under 60 with senior citizen parents can claim up to ₹75,000 in total under 80D.

Home Loan Tax Benefits

A home loan offers two separate deductions under the older tax regime:

Old Regime vs. New Regime

All of the deductions above apply under the old tax regime. The new tax regime offers lower slab rates but strips out most exemptions and deductions, including 80C and 80D. Whether the old regime's deductions save you more than the new regime's lower rates depends on how much you actually invest and claim — it's worth running both scenarios rather than assuming one is always better.
